Under the NAIC Model Act: waiting periods for illnesses or non-accident orthopedic conditions may not exceed 30 days; waiting periods for accidents are prohibited; the policy must allow waiting periods to be waived after a vet exam; and waiting periods must be clearly disclosed before purchase (NAIC Model Act).
Some insurers also won't accept pets above a certain age (NAIC).
